Palace Astra

The Lindt Department Store was designed on the site of an older Baroque complex that had been demolished. There used to be two houses here (U Samsonů and U Matoušků), which were owned by the industrialist Lindt. Both facades of the Functionalist building were originally characterized by a combination of cladding on the reinforced concrete structure and large ribbon windows; however, these were later replaced on the 2nd through 4th floors with steel windows featuring aluminum sashes with finer divisions, which stands in stark contrast to the original design. The top floor was then constructed with studio-style windows.
